Ballots Against Bullets
2020 print, OOH, and digital campaign for Change the Ref, an organization that seeks to bring about change and prevent gun violence through nonviolent creative confrontation.
Despite 417 mass shootings in 2019, the issue of gun violence in the U.S. was completely absent from the 2020 election debates. With elections around the corner, we wanted to make sure people knew their candidates before voting for them.
The only way to prevent mass shootings from happening is by voting for politicians who support gun violence prevention. We partnered with Change the Ref to bring this issue front and center as voters filled out their ballots. The campaign features real photos from the aftermath of well-known mass shootings, including Pulse Nightclub and El Centro College, and puts a spotlight on the elected officials who were in power. Officials who chose to vote against gun regulation before and after the events.
The images superimpose a ballot box over photos of real bullet holes taken at the scenes of these shootings. Next to the ballot hole is the name of the politician who was in office. The result represents the power that politicians and voters hold, and the violent consequences that follow.
